American woman being amazed how little British people know of their own history and culture.
But, this is actually a brilliant demonstration of a really deep aspect of reality "savoir" vs "connaitre."
Does an oak tree know why its leaves fall in the autumn? No but its still does it. Does a native know why they live the way they do, no they just do it.
You can always tell a tourist or foreigner because even if they do follow local customs, they could still be "faking" it through "savoir" and learning. Once it becomes their home they will just do it without thinking.
This is a logical necessarily: we need to be acquainted with learning to even do this.
This is the irony of tourism: you know when you have really arrived when the place seems normal and home - in other words when it doesn't feel like you have travelled. So if you feel like you are travelling is it because you never arrived.
And that is the sickness that is at the heart of Capitalism.
What she is talking about is just the foreigner experience of any community (and life)
