Chris Packham on the case of cows with his Plant Based Pledge. Tho I keep reminding myself something extraordinary I worked out (ages ago in this blog).. I use more oil cycling than a car. If you eat in the Western intensive Capitalist agriculture system even if its only vegan and then bicycle the system is so incredibly inefficient (using 6x more oil energy than the food energy it creates) that you end up using more oil to get from A to B than a car. Even cutting out cows won't solve the problem that Capitalism fundamentally doesn't work. We need a return to less intensive agriculture more carefully integrated into natural systems. Basically rip it all up and head back to what worked. I heard from a Western farmer who worked part of the year in China that Chinese traditional agriculture is more efficient over all than intensive because intensive only works on certain soils and terrains while traditional farming works across all the land, doesn't use artificial fertiliser (removing need for oil which is the energy intensive bit) and is harvested by hand (using energy from the more efficient system solving my cycling problem) meaning a wide diversity of plants are cultivated. Plus this avoids famines caused by mono crop failures. The actual reason we use intensive in the West is just that it is easy to own (machines and land) and profit from. and as we are finding out this food is actually bad for our health (obvious really cos its made for the wrong reasons). Okay seriously complex subject but just driving for profits is heading us in the wrong direction. It is more than just going vegan,
A search for happiness in poverty. Happiness with personal loss, and a challenge to the wisdom of economic growth and environmental exploitation.
