Safekeeping? From who or what? Not human we've been here 200k years. Ah Capitalism. So we would rather have Capitalism than Life? well just let it die then. Seriously what is the point? You know who the culprits are? I always championed the artists of nature who created all those intoxicating and spellbinding illustrations of living things in the Victorian period onwards. Who has not looked through a bird or insect book and not instinctively created a mental catalogue of things they want to see. This is evolutionary as we used these skills to find food. But of course what was happening is that real breathing life was gradually becoming catalogue/museum life. Ironically people are more aware of nature than ever before due to David Attenborough et al. I still find it amazing that it took until 1789 and Gilbert White for the Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler to be formally separated. All those farm hands sowing in spring and never noticed the birds with distinct songs turning up. But those farm hand "knew" actual nature - the sights, sounds, smells, feelings, tastes of a living world. While today we already only know a dead world which opens the door to Capitalism and the dead junk it mass produces. The world and its people are already dead what is the point of storing arbitrary DNA sequences that belong to organisms that evolved alongside one another and which only makes sense in that context? We live on the backs of yet more #idiots who have not thought any of this through.
